Gats’ Gates Scholarships will fund students in over 1,000 US high schools, with up to $30,000 per student.
This is a huge increase from the current amount of $4,000.
The program is set to be funded entirely by donations and Gates has promised to use the money for the students, not her own.
The initiative is a major step in addressing the lack of access to higher education and is a massive step towards increasing access to the world.
“The Gates Scholarship is a great way to help our nation’s students access the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for free, while also giving them the opportunity to help create a better future for our children,” Gates said.
“For those of us who have been working to end racism and inequality, this is a critical first step in helping us achieve our goals.”
Gates is hoping the program will bring together all the US’s rich and powerful to “break down the barriers that have made it impossible for students to reach the dreams and aspirations of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.”
Gates also announced a new scholarship in partnership with a leading philanthropist, Steve Jurvetson, and his company, Jurvetic, in order to further the Gates Scholars program.
“It is truly humbling to see so many people who care about children, the planet, and humanity come together to make this vision a reality,” Gates added.
“This new scholarship will help provide the funding for students who will be entering college and careers beyond high school, with more opportunities to learn and contribute to society in the years ahead.”
